Norway's first 5G auction has started

Today, 3 June 2019, the Norwegian Communications Authority (Nkom) has started the 700 MHz and 2.1 GHz auction, where bidders may acquire important 5G frequency resources for the next 20 years.

Frequency resources in the 700 MHz band are important for fast rollout of 5G (next generation mobile technology) in Norway, and are available for deployment from 1 November 2019. Nkom also offers for award in this auction important resources in the 2.1 GHz band.

“The 700 MHz band can provide better coverage and capacity in mobile networks, and one of the key objectives of the award is obtaining better mobile coverage along main motorways and railways”, says John-Eivind Velure, Director of Spectrum Department.

For the first time, winners of licence will be allowed to postpone payment of parts of their auction prices. In return they will be required to make investments equal to NOK 250 million in new and better coverage over the next two years.

Nkom will publish results when the auction is finished.
